I am not a make up-person, nor am I a clutter person… except when it is relevant. For example the body scrub and candles with jewelry in them? Yeah I’ll buy into that. If I can’t stand the scent after I’ve burned of the candle I’ll just put it at the free table at work, or give the body scrub to a friend to use instead of have it in my home. Monthly lipstick or make up products though? Not for me, some days I wish I could be that girl that can put on full face of make up and do fancy stuff with my hair, but I’m not nor will I ever be. To be honest we are all just lucky I wash my face daily in the shower and at night and put on face cream!
It’s been an on-going source of giggles for me when people say they’re minimalists yet they subscribe to monthly boxes that get them tons of trinkets and – in my opinion for the most part – useless stuff that will collect dust. How many lipsticks do you really need anyway? I’ve got a couple of different shades that I’ve gotten for various important occasions…. you know when I use them? Those special occasions I bought them for… literally holiday season events, or weddings. Give me a basic tinted lip balm with SPF 30 anyday and I am golden… even then I only need one. So yeah. Good on ya folks for putting on a full face of makeup or mastering a Brazillian Blowout but I’ll take looking like Princess Buttercup any day (pre-Prince Humperdink).
This is why I have been so picky with the subscription boxes I’ve chosen to partake in. We have a full house here, so we don’t have room for excess, we already have excess excess! I do my best to keep it as organized as possible, and donate to secondhand shops wherever possible, the reality is simply that I can’t afford – space wise – to buy into subscription boxes that will not actually be used or serve a purpose. You gotta earn your place in this household Mr. Subscription!
Therefore to date I have agreed to participate in 2 (well 3 technically) subscription boxes. They are as follows:
Umai Crate from “Japan Crate” – it includes 6-8 different instant ramens and some fun extra stuff including spices, and a recipe card on how to spruce up your instant soup!
Loot Crate LootWear for Her – A monthly subscription for a piece of Female-geek-themed clothing or accessory. From what I can tell they’ve mainly been sending out t-shirts, so that is a win for me because ever since I had melanoma removed from the middle of my chest a few years back, I mainly wear highneck t-shirts so I don’t have to wear bandanas or scarves all the time(though I have many of those too, and apparently I could get one through this subscription box).
My “Technical” 3rd subscription is Loot Crate’s LootWear Tee subscription – A monthly subscription for a Geek-themed T-shirt. I say ‘technically’ my 3rd because it’s technically my boyfriend’s subscription… but we tend to share t-shirts a lot so I am counting it at as my 3rd subscription.
The only few reasons I’m agreeing to participate in these subscripitions is because firstly my boyfriend and I won’t have to think about lunches for ourselves for a few days each month – that was an instant win for us, and secondly small town B.C. is hard to find cool nerd stuff in. We’d have to drive out to one of the bigger cities to find the small amounts of stuff there is there or order online – and believe it or not I’ve had entire online carts of items ineligible for shipment from a particular nerd themed store chain to Canada (even though there are locations in Canada in fact one it 2.5 hours away from here…. it is the most frustrating thing. So, we’re hoping these geek subscriptions work out!
At the end of the day, I can’t tell you “how to choose a subscription”. I don’t know you or your lifestyle. I just know we researched the different types of crates that grabbed our attention, we compared prices and quality of customer service, watched and read reviews on them, and are taking everything in stride – the bad with the good. More power to ya if you can get through a dozen bottles of face cream or body lotion, in a year, or multiple mascaras or eyeliners or make up brushes. I know that sort of subscription would be a waste of money for us since I’m still working on a “bonus-size” bottle of my facewash I picked up in September 2019 – and it isn’t all that big.
